Executive Director

Chris Otis joined SMART Reading as executive director in December 2010. In that time, she has effectively led the organization through multiple strategic planning processes that have resulted in impressive program growth – both quantitatively and qualitatively – incorporated equity throughout the organization and the communities it serves, and improved financial stability.

With Otis at the helm, the number of children SMART Reading serves annually across Oregon has grown by nearly 50 percent, and revenue has grown by 75 percent. In 2019-20, SMART Reading will reach 11,000 children in nearly 300 sites with reading support and 145,000 books to keep, thanks to the help of more than 5,000 volunteers.

Smart

Chris has a rich background of more than 20 years in nonprofit leadership. Prior to joining SMART Reading, she served as executive director for the Children’s Relief Nursery, a child abuse prevention program serving high-risk children and families in Portland. She has also served as the executive director for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—Oregon Chapter; the Oregon Alliance of Senior and Health Services; and the California Association of School Psychologists; and served as the deputy executive director for the California Chiropractic Association. She served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Portland, where she was recruited to design and teach a course on nonprofit management for MBA students at the University’s School of Business. She received both her MBA and her Bachelor’s degrees from California State University in Sacramento. Chris presently serves on the Board of Directors for the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and is a mentor/consultant for the Willamette Valley Development Officers. She is also a Senior Fellow with the American Leadership Forum.
